The Fang people of Africa used masks like these in their secret societies. Members of this society wore the Ngil masks during the initiation of new members and the punishment of crimainals and wrongdoers. Masqueraders, dressed in raffia costumes and attended by assistants, would materialize in the village at night fall, illuminated by a fire flickering nearby.

The Fang tribe are spread over a vast area along the Atlantic coast of equatorial Africa and can be found in Cameroon, Guinea and Gabon along the bank of the Ogowe river.
